Glasgow is the first operational HotRot Composting facility in the UK. Back in 2005 the Wholesale Markets at Blochairn were owned and operated by Glasgow City Council but are now operated by a private company, City Markets (Glasgow) LLP.
At the time the Markets were producing around 4 - 6 tonnes of discarded fruit, vegetables, waste wood and cardboard which was costing the Council and stall holders a considerable amount to dispose of each year.
HotRot were able to provide a turnkey solution for these waste streams, designing a secure compound, reception building, picking line, prepreparation solution, HotRot composting unit, automated screening and maturation/ storage.
The site has successfully composted the Market's waste ever since - recently being acredited with PAS100 status.
Having achieved pay back on the plant the Market pays only the minimal operating costs (<£10/tonne) and has turned the project into a profitable enterprise - able to sell the 800 or so tonnes of compost it produces to landscaping companies and the general public.
