Rendsburg Box AD

Rendsburg1

Rendsburg near Hamburg has been operating since 2008 after BEKON won the municipality tender to provide an Anaerobic Digestion facility for the Council’s co-mingled green and food wastes.  The facility is designed to process 30,000tpa and produce 1MW of electrical output from the installed CHP engines.

In addition, the Rendsburg plant was the first to feature enclosed composting/drying of the digestate in aerated tunnels.  Once, each of the 28m x 6m digesters is emptied, half the digested material is sent for composting while the remaining half is mixed with incoming material to “seed” it with methane producing bugs.

Testing has shown that the maturity of the material exiting the composting tunnels is the equivalent to the criteria for PAS100 in the UK.  Post tunnel composting the material is matured in a large open-sided hall in windrows to achieve the maxim German standard for maturity.

The project replaces an older  in-vessel composting plant originally built by Herhof.  The inclusion of the AD plant at the front end has seen odour levels from the site decrease significantly since.
